We're Setting Sail
Come Away with the Destinations Collection
“This collection feels equal parts happy and a bit escapist,” says Ala in describing the origins of the AvA Destinations collection. “Looking at it puts me in a good mood, and we could all use a bit of that these days.”
Though the idea of travel might feel different this year, AvA’s newest collection offers effortless, irreverent styles meant to evoke the essence of a day at the beach or evening cocktails in the balmy Caribbean air. They’re clothes that have the power to transport, whether you’re off to somewhere warm or channeling island life at home. Happy hues of canary yellow, coral, plum and pops of green mix with tones of royal blue, turquoise and lavender and feel like a departure from the realities of the everyday.
Inspired by Ala’s own art, new prints range from the iconic Bougainvillea that line the homes of Antigua, to the geometric Sand Track that echo the zigzag formations sand crabs make, to interlocking Love Birds and Birds of Paradise prints; the latter two mark an evolution of fall’s Plumage collection and conjure an optimistic, uplifting spirit amidst these challenging times.
“I was already thinking about drawing birds, and this inspired me to do it,” says Ala, who was taken by the beauty of the birds she encountered on a trip to Italy last year. She first spotted them surrounding the garden frescoes upon leaving an exhibition of Pompeii. She was instantly captivated by their shape and color. “I started drawing Birds of Paradise in both large and small forms. They are unbelievably exotic and beautiful.”
Whether you’re headed to the islands or just running errands in town, new styles in the Destinations collection are meant to travel with you. The Kimberly Dress is a riff off the classic AvA Kathe shirt dress with the addition of a belt and A-line silhouette. It’s both wearable and flattering.
There’s also a wealth of separates like the Ala Kimono, which, according to Ala, “is easy to wear, tailored and has incredible versatility.” The Georgia camisole is a flirtatious style that can layer underneath the kimono or the new Sunny blazer, a continuation of AvA’s outerwear offerings originally designed for Sunny.
“I like the idea of more structure right now,” Ala says. There’s also the Naomi top with ruffle sleeves that pairs back to the Crawford skirt for a fun, flamenco-inspired look, as well as simple ruffled t-shirts one could wear while out with friends or lounging at home. “I wanted to create pieces that anybody could feel comfortable wearing at any time,” says Ala, “wherever they are.”
