Ala in New York

Summer Highlights &
What She's Wearing

I love coming to New York City—especially in the fall, but also during the quieter stretches of summer. It gives me a chance to catch up on the things I’ve missed, whether it’s exhibitions, performances, or just the energy of the city itself. I usually come in for a few days at a time for work and always try to fit in a few experiences I don’t want to miss.

Here are a few of the things I’ve really enjoyed lately:

The Buena Vista Social Club on Broadway
An absolute joy. The music is so beautiful and danceable—it’s been playing around my house ever since I got back, and I’ll likely keep it going until everyone starts covering their ears. It’s full of life, with a storyline that’s both touching and engaging. Pure magic.

The Sargent Exhibition at The Met
On view through August 3, this exhibit gave me a whole new appreciation for John Singer Sargent. I’ve always admired his portraiture, but seeing his landscapes up close—along with the incredible detail and texture in his work—was truly inspiring. A must-see if you’re in the city.

Mission: Impossible at The Museum of the Moving Image
I saw the latest installment on opening night at this Queens gem, and it might be my favorite one yet. But the real surprise was the museum itself—a stunning theater with a state-of-the-art Dolby sound system, plus a fantastic exhibit of film costumes and props. I’ll definitely be watching their calendar for future events.

What I'm Wearing in New York

By Day

I’ve been living in our stretch cotton separates—especially the Gabriel Pants paired with either the Keaton Blouse or Rhea Jacket in Khaki Comfortable, polished, and ideal for transitioning from sidewalk to subway to meetings.

When it’s truly hot, I reach for the Althea Jacket in Blue Noisette in a breezy cotton eyelet fabric. Eyelet is a lightweight cotton fabric featuring small, embroidered cut-outs that form a delicate pattern—often floral or geometric. The effect is airy, breathable, and subtly textured, making it perfect for warm-weather dressing. I love it because it adds just the right touch of femininity and structure without ever feeling heavy. It’s crisp, cool, and perfect for daytime in the city. I also love the Arabelle Cotton Eyelet Dress in Blue Noisette—flattering, pretty, and always appropriate.

For evenings or outings:

The Elise Silk Organza Kimono in Rose Rouge is my go-to for a dressed-up dinner or night at the theater. Silk organza is a sheer, lightweight fabric with a crisp hand and elegant structure. It holds its shape beautifully while still feeling delicate and airy, making it ideal for layering. I wear it over our Caterina Tank Top and Gabriele Pants in black or white for a dramatic, elegant look. The Lucille Cotton Tunic in Red Ranunculus with our Gabriele Pants in White is effortless and chic for a relaxed dinner downtown or a day of errands.

One of my favorite pulled-together looks: the Carol Cotton Maxi Skirt with a crisp white shirt and the matching belt. It’s classic, easy, and works just about anywhere. Avalaible in two of my favorite prints this year, Blue Pansies and Raspberry Grandiflora.

New York always leaves me feeling inspired—between gallery visits, Broadway shows, and evenings out, it’s a place where creativity sparks. I spend time here in my studio, meeting with the team and creating our upcoming AvA collections. These city moments—filled with energy, art, and style—fuel everything I do. I hope these shared experiences and outfit ideas bring a bit of that New York inspiration to your summer plans, wherever they may take you.
